Nursery 2 Termly Overview

TERM 1

Animals

In Term 1, our N2 theme was “Animals”. Children learnt about the different animals in River Safari Singapore and even went for a field trip to explore and experience interactions with the animals! Children also learnt the specific terms for the animals such as ‘Manatee’, ‘Squirrel monkey’ and ‘Giant panda’.

In Term 2, children had fun learning through “Play” which was our theme of the term. Children learnt specifically on ball play and bubble play both indoors and outdoors. To sum up what they have learnt, children did an artwork by bouncing or rolling a ball on paper.

TERM 2

For Term 3, under “Community Helpers”, children are interested in learning more about postman as they once met a postman during outdoor walk. Children will get to learn more about the roles of a postman, and they will get to experience being a postman by delivering letters as well.

Lesson Overview - "Let's be Postman!"

For the current Term 3 with the broad theme of our LilChamps House being 'Community Helpers', the Nursery 2 Little Champs have found an interest in learning about 'Postman'. Thus, the project topic of the term for our N2 is

 'Postman'

In this lesson, children will be learning about what a postman does daily and will get to experience being a postman. Children will understand how to sort mails and will learn to identify who to deliver the mail to. Children will then draw or write their own letter to their parents and be the postman of the day!

Co-constructing allows children to form their own knowledge through interactions with teachers, peers and/or the environment. It helps children to actively express their understanding and share their feelings or experiences during lesson. Documenting is an important part of co-constructing as it helps to organize children’s thoughts and ideas into a written or pictorial form. When children look back at the documentations, it helps them to extend their current level of understanding as they reflect and build on their own knowledge (MacNaughton & Williams, 2009).

Teacher Jeslyn first introduces who a postman is and what a postman does in his daily life. She attracted children’s attention by asking children to guess what is inside her mysterious bag. Teacher took out the letters from her bag and surprised children with a letter from the postman! She documented her children’s thoughts to the question, “What do you think happen to the postman?” by writing their opinions on a paper.

Teacher Jeslyn then read the letter with children, explaining to children that the Postman was sick, and he needed help.

Children helped to sort the letters. With prompts

from Teacher Jeslyn, children started to share

different ways to sort the letters and got to learn

from one another. As they try to sort the letters,

children also build their knowledge on sorting and

skills on communication.

Children gave all sorts of creative suggestions and

Teacher Jeslyn allowed children to explore their

suggestions by sorting the letters. Teacher Jeslyn

also learnt to look and think from her children's

perspective that the letters can actually be sorted

by open and close flaps of the envelopes!

After learning how to sort the letters, children learn how to identify the addressee on the letter in order to be the postman of the day. With ideas and thoughts from one another, children learn from their friends that a name, address and stamp is needed for a postman to deliver the letter to the receiver.

Joey: "White"

Regine: "Red"

Sabrina suggested to sort by colour!

"What are the different colours?"

After the lesson, Teacher Jeslyn organizes her children's ideas and thoughts on N2's documentation board, with pictures and short description. By documenting children's learning, it helps to build a sense of belonging for children (Santrock, 2014) in class and enhance their learning and build on their current level of understanding as they reflect on their own work (MacNaughton & Williams, 2009).
